The Humphrey ADE Circle Anaesthetic Breathing System

The Humphrey ADE-circle anesthetic breathing system is a unique multipurpose anesthetic breathing system for adults, children and veterinary used with or without a recycling soda lime canister absorber. This is a new award-winning specialist anesthesia product.  It is an advanced anesthetic breathing system which is much more efficient and green than most common systems used in anesthesia.

All the advantages of existing alternatives are included. New concepts in anesthesia have also been incorporated such as the new specially designed exhaust valve for pediatrics as well as adults. The design incorporates a new exhaust valve that saves all gas that can be re-used while eliminating only excess unwanted used gas. For example it uses up to 80% less anesthetic gas when compared to the T-piece for pediatric and small animal anesthesia. It has also been shown to be exceptionally efficient as it requires low fresh gas flows in all modes of use, lower than thought possible for spontaneous respiration. Savings of running costs for oxygen and anesthetic vapor are significant and can pay for the apparatus in months.

The Humphrey ADE-circle system has been developed over 20 years to provide a safe multipurpose system that offers the anesthetist a choice of technique for all circumstances he may face. Being simple to operate, no specialist knowledge is required and its design was initially aimed at Third World hospitals where the author worked for 4 years. The system has won research and design awards. Hence its application has extended to all environments where safety, simplicity and cost-effectiveness are of paramount importance.

The HUMPHREY ADE as a semi-closed system: Without re-cycling, the general efficiency of other anesthetic systems varies from about 70% to as little as 25%; in other words some function on three times less fresh gas than others and yet achieve the same effect. In all modes of use the Humphrey ADE system uses the lowest fresh gas flow.

In summary the Humphrey ADE system without the circle requires an average fresh gas flow (FGF) of only 3-4litres/min for adults, 2-3 litres/min for children; with the absorber flows can be reduced to as low as the anaesthetist feels comfortable but 1 litre/min is generally a safe flow. No other system offers these combined benefits.

The new ADE valve incorporates a unique design that allows the anesthetist to see its function. When open during expiration, an extended valve-seat stem lifts into a recess on the top of the valve. With each breath the reflected orange stem is easily seen as a flashing image. Valve function can be checked at any time by squeezing the reservoir bag.

Following its acceptance in human anesthesia since 1982 where it has been used in an estimated 15 million anesthetics, the Humphrey ADE-circle now offers the same benefits in small animal practice. Subsequent to papers presented on research on cats and dogs at the BSAVA Birmingham UK congress in 2000 (Humphrey and Dobromylskyj), it was introduced into veterinary practice with much acclaim. It has been introduced as a simple easy-to-use cost-effective system to replace all others, requiring just one liter/min gas flow for all animals.

The ADE-circle system benefits animals with warmer humidified gases, while at the same time theater and atmospheric pollution are much reduced. It is MRI compatible, and while not often used in veterinary practice, a lever converts it into the mode required for automatic ventilators.

With the increasing use of MRI scanners, the strong magnets within these scanners prevent the use of standard anesthetic machines near the unit, necessitating the purchase of expensive MRI compatible machines. The HUMPHREY ADE-CIRCLE system can circumvent this problem such that standard anesthetic machines can be used.
